Christians are thought to be "people of the book" because it is the bible which teaches and guides us. But Gods word is much more that a rulebook to us - it is a historical record of God's redemptive actions on this world.
We are not saved by following rules in a book, we are saved by a person - the person of Jesus Christ - the Living Word himself.
We are not saved by having faith in and of itself, but rather by having faith in the Christ Jesus. It is the bible which Jesus uses to author and perfect our faith.
